David Smith is our Business Coach and part of the Worksop Turbine team. David brings with him a wealth of experience; following a 20 year career in the banking sector, David has successfully managed and delivering a wide range of business support programmes across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. A resident of North Derbyshire, David has lived and worked in this area throughout his career and understands the issues faced by local businesses.

David completed the formal banking qualification, Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, and has since achieved a Diploma in Business Support and a Level 5 Certificate in Management.

Key areas in which other businesses have tapped into David's expertise have been strategic planning, finding new customers and accessing finance including applying for grant funding. David feels that a major part of his support role is for business owners to have an impartial and independent "sounding board", to be able to share ideas, aims and objectives before deciding on the most appropriate course of action. Having made that decision, David will then guide them through the implementation process, helping them to measure progress and take remedial action as required.

The Growth Challenge

Paul Kelly is a skilled and qualified designer and following redundancy decided to work for himself. Using his design skills and outsourcing the manufacture, Paul has created a range of high quality, eye catching clothing products for the sports market. There are a range of options open to Paul and following a strategic review, Oxford Innovation have helped him to focus on the key areas of his business as outlined below.

Key areas of support:

  • Market analysis to identify market options open to the business and competitor strengths & weaknesses in each case.

  • Recognition of seasonality of the respective sports and the need to carefully plan marketing accordingly.

  • Develop a marketing strategy to address the above.  

  • Raise awareness of IP exposure and identifying partner support available. 

  • Help in sourcing funding to increase product range, meeting customer requirements to further develop brand loyalty.

Results achieved

  • Although the product range can be sold into a wide range of sports, we identified that many of these would be difficult to break into and Paul has focused on BMX, Motocross and Mountain Biking apparel.  Stak Clothing are already developing a strong brand profile, supplying some of the top BMX teams in the UK and will be entering their own team “Team Stak” in the 2015-16 season which will generate further profile.

  • Funding has been secured to develop additional products to complement the shirts, such as leggings and gloves. The ability to supply a “full set” of branded wear will open up new markets as well as increasing cross sale opportunities to existing customers.

  • As orders continue to grow, Paul is aware that he needs to create additional capacity and is considering options to grow the business by bringing in additional admin support to enable him to focus on design and sales.
